Frequently Asked Questions
Is Trauma informed coaching different from therapy?
Yes, Trauma-informed coaching and therapy differ in focus, scope, and approach.
Therapy focuses on diagnosing and treating mental health issues through deep exploration of past experiences and emotions, using evidence-based techniques like CBT or EMDR by licensed mental health professionals who can provide structured treatment plans.
Trauma-informed coaching acknowledges how trauma affects individuals and supports them in healing and developing resilience. This approach fosters a safe, non-judgmental space where clients can progress and thrive. Trauma-informed coaches provide tools and strategies to help clients manage trauma-related symptoms and improve their quality of life. It’s important to note that trauma-informed coaches cannot diagnose or treat disorders. While there is no universal requirement for certification specifically in trauma-informed coaching, many coaches are trained in trauma-informed practices and may hold certifications in related fields.
Why do Adult children of narcissists have trauma?
- Invalidation and Gaslighting: Narcissistic parents often invalidate their children’s feelings, and identities. They may gaslight them by denying their reality or manipulating situations to make the child doubt themselves.
- Emotional Neglect: N-parents are often self-centered and neglect their children emotionally. This can lead to feelings of worthlessness, loneliness, and a lack of self-esteem.
- Manipulation and Control: N-parents may manipulate their children to meet their own needs, using guilt, fear, or emotional blackmail.
- Conditional Love: N- parents only show affection or approval when their children meet their unreasonable demands. This can leave the child feeling unworthy and constantly striving for validation.
- Roles: Children of narcissists often find themselves in roles such as the caretaker or the scapegoat within the family dynamic, which can lead to a distorted sense of responsibility and guilt.
- Cycle of Abuse: The unpredictability and inconsistency of a n-parent’s behavior create an environment of chronic stress and fear. This can result in complex trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (C-PTSD).
- Impact on Identity and Relationships: Growing up with a n-parent can impact a child’s sense of self, and ability to trust others. They may struggle with self-doubt, difficulty asserting their needs, and challenges in forming healthy connections.
Overall, the trauma experienced by adult children of narcissists is caused due to the profound emotional and psychological wounds inflicted by narcissistic parental behaviors that prioritize their needs over the child’s.
What is somatic trauma-informed coaching approach?
Somatic trauma-informed coaches use a body-centered approach to help clients heal and build resilience:
- Body Awareness: Coaches use mindfulness and body-focused methods to help clients become aware of physical sensations linked to trauma and related anxiety.
- Regulation and Grounding: Coaches teach techniques to calm clients’ nervous systems, such as grounding exercises and relaxation practices.
- Trauma Response Integration: Through somatic experiencing, they guide clients in safely processing and releasing stored trauma energy.
- Resilience Building: Coaches empower clients with self-care strategies and positive coping skills to foster resilience.
- Holistic Approach: They recognize the mind-body connection and may collaborate with other professionals to provide comprehensive support.
